Advocates said many families spend years on waitlists for licensed daycare providers because of drastic shortages in child-care spaces and early childhood educators.

Officials say the money is "without conditions," adding that the province already spends $2.7 billion a year on its child-care system, which costs parents $8.50 a day per child.
