Edmonton-based Bee Clean says it owes janitor employees back pay for overtime

A company that uses some temporary foreign workers to clean the University of Alberta says it owes some of the janitors back pay for overtime.

Bee-Clean Building Maintenance says it is apologizing to the employees and is working with the provincial government to ensure the workers are paid what they are owed.

Earlier this month the Services Employee International Union filed lawsuits over the unpaid wages and an unfair labour practice complaint on behalf of the workers.

Some of the employees say they have been fired or have been threatened to be fired for wanting to join the union and for complaining about their overtime.

Robert Scott, a spokesman for Bee-Clean, said the Edmonton-based company employs about 100 temporary foreign workers in Alberta and has hired accounting firm KPMG to review its payroll.

Scott says the unpaid overtime was due to an administrative error and that Bee-Clean plans to sue the union for defamation over the unfair labour practice allegations.
