ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Talks are underway in Labrador to improve management of the George River caribou herd.
Innu hunters have been involved in a dispute with the Newfoundland and Labrador government over hunting rights.
Preliminary results from a census conducted in July 2010 indicate a significant decline in the population.
Native hunters say the decline is the result of several factors, including development and resource extraction.
The province is looking for feedback from consultations to determine revisions to the hunt.
Environment Minister Charlene Johnson says the province wants to hear from individuals and groups with an interest in sustaining the herd.
