Calgary police identify victim of fatal Forest Lawn shooting

An early morning shooting in the southeast neighbourhood of Forest Lawn has claimed the life of a 44-year-old man

The shooting, which investigators believe to be targeted, occurred around 5 a.m. Friday near the intersection of 17th Avenue and 43rd Street S.E.

Police confirmed one man was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries. The deceased has been identified as Jeremy Burton Jimmy following an autopsy conducted Friday afternoon.

Police have not released details regarding a suspect or suspects but, as of Friday afternoon, no arrests have been made.

The Calgary Police Service homicide unit is leading the investigation. A section of 17th Avenue was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

Barry Zarokostas manages a business in the area and police have secured surveillance footage from its cameras. He says 17th Avenue has gotten better in recent years and its sad when situations like Friday’s shooting occur.

“I’ve worked here for about 25 years now,” Zarokostas told Global News. “Most people in this area are good people, hardworking.

“Listen, (crime) happens in all four corners of the city and, unfortunately, this is a lower end area (and) it happens a little more often.”

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may have information regarding the shooter’s identity is asked to contact the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
