Old Dutch makes literally tons and tons of potato chips here in Winnipeg. They process a million pounds of potatoes a week, begetting about 300,000 pounds of chips. And though in the grocery aisle the varieties seem endless, we count 40 different potato or nacho-style chips.
After our tour of Old Dutch’s Winnipeg facility for our While Your Were Sleeping feature, the Morning News staff got together and ranked their favourite flavours. There were some tears and punches as some classics did not make the list (Salt ‘n’ vinegar anyone?) After careful accounting by the partners at KPMG*, here are the results:
10. Sour Cream & Onion
9. Nacho Cheese Arriba
8. Ketchup
7. Dill Pickle
6. Sour Cream & Green Onion Rip-L
Says Morning News producer Neil: “Sour cream and green onion chips are good. They fill my belly.”
5. All Dressed
Get daily National news
4. BBQ
3.
Sundried Tomato Basil (Kettle Cooked)
A surprise finisher since none of us knew the flavour existed before our trip to the Old Dutch plant. Says Brittany: “Sundried tomato and basil – instant winner. Straight to the top of the list.”
2.
Parmesan & Garlic (Kettle)
Writer Katie says: “Eating parmesan and garlic was like the first time I heard the Beatles.”
1.
Jalapeno & Cheddar (Kettle)
The only chip that made everyone’s top 10.
*KPMG had nothing to do with this story. I do understand they are big Mexican Chili fans.
