CANCUN, Mexico – A 19-year-old Kitchener woman died after falling off a seventh-floor balcony at a resort hotel in Cancun, and Mexican police are investigating, according to local media reports.

Mexico City’s La Journada reported that Giannina Di Roberto plunged from the balcony of her room at Hotel Riu Caribe on Thursday following an argument with her boyfriend, 21-year-old Shane Stickel.

Neighbours reported hearing the couple argue for about half an hour about another man at the hotel bar who was flirting with Di Roberto. According to Diario de Quintana Roo, a Cancun-area newspaper, Stickel told investigators Di Roberto committed suicide, but police aren’t ruling anything out while they determine the cause of death.

According to Stickel’s website, shanestickel.com, he is an engineering student at Conestoga College in Kitchener and an amateur stock-car racer. Di Roberto was listed as a member of his pit crew on vintagemods.com, a website devoted to Canadian stock-car racing.

Lisa Monette, a spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs, said in an e-mail the ministry is aware of "the death of a Canadian citizen in Cancun."

Monette said consular officials in Mexico are working with local police in the investigation and have contacted the victim’s family.

No charges have yet been laid.
