Man stabbed succumbs to injuries in hospital: Calgary police

A man died of his injuries after a stabbing early Thursday in Calgary’s downtown core.

Calgary police found a man with life-threatening injuries while patrolling downtown at around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Police called paramedics, who took him to Foothills hospital in critical condition. He died in hospital from the severity of the injuries.

The victim was found at City hall CTrain station. Police believed the fatal stabbing happened in the Olympic Plaza and the victim travelled to the train station before collapsing.

Officers used CCTV footage from the area and the accounts of witnesses to quickly identify two suspects, a man and woman.

The two suspects were arrested without incident and brought in for questioning.

An autopsy for the victim is scheduled for Thursday.

Police said that Macleod Trail is closed to northbound traffic between 7th and 9th avenues as police are in the area to preserve the scene.

Police confirmed that while they were investigating, a man breached the barriers of the crime scene. The man was asked to leave and refused.

A detective started to escort the man out of the area when the man threw a water bottle at the detective after a short altercation, said police.

The man is now being charged with assault of a peace officer and obstruction.

The Calgary homicide unit is still investigating. Police confirmed there is no risk to the public.
