Winnipeg police say two people have been arrested, and more charges are coming, after police shut down an illegal magic mushroom dispensary on Osborne Street Friday
The store in the first 100 block of Osborne had only been open a few days, but police say hundreds of people had already bought psilocybin and other controlled substances.
The Organized Crime Division says it was in direct violation of the Controlled Drugs and Substances act, and the store is now closed.
Health Canada says there are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin in Canada or elsewhere and that’s why police stepped in.
“We initiated a full-scale drug investigation, so this is not just going to be drug trafficking, it’s going to be inter-provincial drug trafficking. We have other warrants going on in the city right now,” said Winnipeg Police Inspector Elton Hall.
“This isn’t acceptable, it’s illegal. It’s not safe, people who are using these don’t know where they’re coming from. We know they’re from out of province, and that’s it.”
Global News has reached out to the store’s lawyer for a response, but has yet to hear back.
Police won’t be pursuing anyone who purchased products from the store.
