The mysterious disappearance of an Orangeville woman led to a grim police appeal on Friday, asking residents to look for her missing, blood-soaked bedsheets and a suspect who likely returned home “covered in a significant amount of blood.”
Sonia Varaschin, a 42-year-old nurse, went missing late Sunday or early Monday morning, and although her family still pleads for her safe return, investigators presented an increasingly desperate picture.
“The most likely scenario is it is someone she knew,” said OPP Detective Inspector Mark Pritchard. “There is nothing to indicate her lifestyle put her at risk.”
The scenario suggested Friday is that Ms. Varaschin was attacked in her home, and her bedding – a beige sheet and matching comforter – were used for the “disposal of biological evidence or just a convenient way of concealing her body,” said Det.-Insp. Pritchard.
Police believe she was then removed from her Spring St. townhouse and put into her car.
“We hope she is still alive, but we have told the family to prepare for the worst,” he said.
Her blood-soaked Toyota Corolla was found Monday parked in the centre of town.
Her family, through police, thanked the public for their help.
“She is a young, active, hard-working and caring individual who deserves the opportunity to continue making a difference in this world and in her community. We miss her dearly and are pleading for her safe return,” the family said in a statement.
Police continue searching the largely rural area on foot, horseback, all-terrain vehicle and from the air.
Varaschin is described as 5’1", 125 lbs., with brown hair with light-coloured streaks.
