EDMONTON – After an exhaustive search, Jack Michaels will be replacing Hall of Famer Rod Phillips as the Edmonton Oilers’ radio voice.
Michaels, who has been the East Coast Hockey League’s Alaska Aces radio and television voice the last eight years and has broadcast the ECHL’s all-star game five times, will be introduced at a Tuesday press conference at Rexall Place.
“An NHL play-by-play job has been a dream and believe me the dream has come true,” said Michaels, in a news release.
Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Emrick, who calls the NHL for NBC and also does the New Jersey Devils, is a Michaels booster. “I met Jack five years ago and was immediately struck by the quality of his call, his professionalism and his passion for the game,” said Emrick.
The U.S. born Michaels started as a sports reporter at Cornell University, moved to Erie, Pa., then got his play-by-play start with the Colorado Gold Kings in the West Coast Hockey League, for three years.
Three other front-runners, Kelowna Rockets’ Regan Bartel, Toronto Marlies John Bartlett and former Score TV broadcaster Steve Kouleas, were told they weren’t getting the job. TSN’s Ryan Rishaug was also interested.
Phillips is retiring after 37 years, but will do 10 selected games this season, involving teams the Oilers have had a playoff history with.
Bob Stauffer will be Michaels’ colour commentator.
More to come …
