Healthy Lifestyle Challenge Eating Plan 4 – Weight Watchers

What is it?  Weight Watchers is one of the longest running weight loss programs, dating back to the the 1960s.  The WW philosophy is to teach members how to eat healthy and maintain it for life.  The new program is called Momentum, the latest version of their points-based system.  There are no foods that are forbidden and though there are WW products available for sale, they are not mandatory.  The core of the WW philosophy is support, so attendance at local group meetings is encouraged.

How does it work?  The “Four Pillars” of WW are behaviour, support, food and exercise.  Members are taught how to make smarter food choices and how to keep hunger at bay.  Instead of counting calories, you are assigned a certain number of points per day.  You can earn more points by exercising.  WW members who regularly attend meetings are much more successful at reaching their goals and maintaining weight loss, but you can also choose to do the program on-line.  Weight loss is targeted at a maximum 2 pounds per week, in accordance with medical recommendations.

Foods with more fiber and less fat have lower points values.

What are the pros?  WW has the support of medical experts.  It encourages sustainable lifestyle changes that can be maintained for the long-term.  Weight loss is at a slow and steady pace.  Food choices are unlimited and flexible, so it is easy to incorporate into your life.  The new program also emphasizes the importance of exercise.  Studies show group support is essential to maintaining weight loss over the long term.  Group meetings are led by WW members.

What are the cons?  Some people don’t like the group meetings, though there is the option to just do it on-line.  And the costs can be prohibitive for some people, averaging around $11-15 per week, depending on the plan you choose.

Costs:  full WW program: $25 registration fee + 5-week plan $79, 12-week plan $175 or 6-month plan $299

WW online program:  $85 for first 3 months, $22/month after that
