Markus Naslund’s number 19 to be retired

VANCOUVER – Overshadowed in his final game as a Canuck by Trevor Linden’s farewell, former Vancouver captain Markus Naslund will get the honor he deserves when the National Hockey League team retires his No. 19 jersey on Dec. 11.

Naslund left Vancouver as a free agent two years ago as the Canucks’ all-time leading scorer with 346 goals and 756 points in 884 games. But he had the misfortune of playing his final game in Vancouver on April 5, 2008 — the last night of Linden’s career.

Linden, 23 points behind Naslund and easily the most popular Canuck in franchise history, had his No. 16 retired two seasons ago. The only other retired jersey, No. 12., belonged to Stan Smyl, the all-time scoring leader before Linden.

To celebrate their 40th NHL season, the Canucks will also acknowledge original captain Orland Kurtenbach on a "ring of honour" in their arena.

The team also announced Wednesday to season-ticket holders it will wear the original Canuck uniform when it plays its season-opener Oct. 9 against the Los Angeles Kings, the Canucks’ first opponent in 1970.
