WINNIPEG — Coun. Scott Fielding is resigning from the powerful executive policy committee, which sets the agenda at city hall.
He said he made the move because of recent 2014 budget decisions and mismanagement at city hall.
Fielding said Mayor Sam Katz called him Thursday night to ask if he’d support a property tax increase.
“I just couldn’t support another property tax increase, especially with some of the mismanagement and bungling that’s been going on here at city hall,” he said, referring to the scandal currently embroiling city hall.
An audit of the fire hall replacement program was highly critical of the way the process was handled, and both that program and the new police headquarters project are millions of dollars over budget.
Fielding said he talked to the mayor Friday morning to let Katz know he was resigning from EPC.
Fielding said he’s considering running for mayor in the next election.
Katz said he’s not surprised by the resignation because Fielding has “aspirations of running at some other level of politics, whether it’s federal or provincial …
“He always said he would not be here any longer than two terms.”
Katz wouldn’t say whether there would be property tax increases above the one per cent passed in the 2013 budget.
“Last year, as you know, we had a property tax increase, and on the floor of council we actually talked about the one per cent property tax increase that we’re hoping to keep going.”
