TORONTO – Officials say attendance was down slightly at this year’s edition of the Canadian National Exhibition, and that bad weather was a major culprit.

General manager David Bednar said Thursday that 1.36 million people visited the CNE in Toronto this year – down from 1.39 million in 2012.

Bednar says attendance was running head of 2012 until bad weather hit, particularly over the last weekend. He adds it was one of the best attended CNE’s in the last 10 years.

A statement issued by the CNE after its annual meeting says the fair also experienced other “challenges.”

They included an outbreak of food poisoning traced to the pastry inspired cronut burgers sold by Epic Burgers and Waffles.

Toronto’s public health agency determined the contamination came from the maple bacon jam topping on the novelty burgers provided by a Toronto-based supplier.
