The suspect is a National Guardsman who was taken into custody, and the Navy and U.S. Army are working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.
The area was briefly put on lockdown as a precaution, but that has since lifted.
The Naval Support Activity Mid-South serves as the Navy’s human resources centre, according to its Facebook page.
The base, located north of Memphis, is headquarters for Navy Personnel Command, Navy Recruiting Command, the Navy Manpower Analysis Center, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Finance Center.
The page says “more than 7,500 military, civilian, and contract personnel are assigned/work on base.”
Editor’s note: The original version of this article said a law enforcement official told The Associated Press that the gunman was a Navy recruiter who had been relieved of duty. The U.S. Navy has since said the suspected gunman is not a Navy recruiter.
