Then and now: Recovery after Hurricane Sandy

Then and now: Recovery after Hurricane Sandy - image

It’s been almost a year since Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the Eastern seaboard on October 29, 2012, affecting 24 states from Florida to Maine and costing the country an estimated $65 billion.

Some areas have recovered well, while the progress in New Jersey is still very much ongoing. At least 26,000 people in Jersey are still out of their homes, with some saying they are yet to see promised rebuilding funds.

The photos below show the recovery nearly a year after the superstorm.

Homeowner Michael Russo (R), is comforted by friend Joseph Bono in Ocean Breeze, Staten Island. The first floor of Russo’s home was completely flooded by the ocean surge caused by Sandy. Russo said that he salvaged an American flag he had stored on the upper shelf of a supply closet.
