Toronto police say a man has been arrested after he was ‘actively shooting’ at officers in Scarborough on Tuesday evening.
Detective Ted Lioumanis said officers in plainclothes were conducting an investigation at a house on Shenley Road, in the area of Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East, at around 8:30 p.m.
Sources told Global News the officers were originally at the residence executing a search warrant when gunshots were fired at them.
“The suspect that they were looking for was identified and attempts were made to arrest this individual,” Lioumanis said. “The suspect then began to discharge his firearm at the police officers.”
The suspect then barricaded himself inside of the home, Lioumanis said. He was the only person inside the home during the time of the incident, Lioumanis added.
Toronto police’s emergency task force arrived to assist in containing the home and began conducting negotiations with the suspect.
After a few hours, Lioumanis said the suspect surrendered himself to police and was arrested.
No injuries were reported.
The officers did not return gunfire, Lioumanis added.
The public was advised to stay out of the area.
“Shenley Road residents are being asked to shelter in their basements,” police said in a follow-up tweet.
There is no threat to public safety.
