Truckers protest delays at ports in the Lower Mainland

A group of truckers carrying signs is gathering in Surrey this morning demanding that changes be made in how goods are handled in Metro Vancouver.

The truckers say they are protesting delays at ports in the Lower Mainland.

“We have concerns about the lineups at the port,” says Paul Johal with the United Truckers Association. “Drivers go out there in the morning and they have to wait around to get into the port — lineups are 3 to 4 hours long. When they are waiting there, they are not getting any money.”

Johal says they held a protest in Delta a year ago, and things have not changed much since then.

“We’ve been at it for the last 7 or 8 years. Nothing has changed,” says Johal.

Johal says they want the Port of Metro Vancouver to cut on wait times, but also prevent drivers from undercutting each other.

The truckers will be moving toward the port authority office near Canada Place later today.
