Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in York Region.
In a tweet just before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, York Regional Police said the incident occurred on Davis Drive, between Bales Road and Warden Avenue.
Police said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle.
“Please avoid the area and find alternate route,” police wrote in the tweet.
Officers said investigators are “looking for witnesses to come forward.”
Icilda Tate, the owner-operator of Newmarket Residence – a home for adults with mental health issues – told Global News a 70-year-old resident went for a walk between 8 p.m., and 9 p.m., on Tuesday night.
Tate said the man frequently took walks.
However, Tate said he was reported missing Wednesday morning when he didn’t return.
Tate said the man had been a resident at Newmarket Residence — which is located around one kilometer east of the site of the collision – since 2015.
According to Tate, she has been speaking with York Regional Police, and “presumes” the deceased pedestrian could be the resident.
Tate said the resident does not have any surviving family.
She said the man was “gentle,” “very helpful” and a “good comrade to his roommates and other residents.”
An area resident told Global News he spoke to police who were at the scene this morning, and was led to believe the crash may have happened overnight.
York Regional Police did not confirm the identity of the deceased — or say when the collision occurred.
