A motorhome travelling the wrong way appeared to have caused a major crash that closed Highway 1 eastbound between the Cypress Bowl exit and 22nd Street for much of Wednesday.
DriveBC reported the route was finally reopened shortly before 7 p.m., more than seven hours after it was closed.
Early reports indicate that the driver of the motorhome was travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes when the vehicle caused two other vehicles to swerve before going head-on with the third and final vehicle.
Police said the driver of the motorhome was a woman in her 20s and she was the only occupant of that car.
BC Emergency Health Services said crews were first called at 11:19 a.m. about a multi-vehicle incident in West Vancouver.
Six ambulances and a supervisor responded. Paramedics cared for and transported six patients: two in critical condition, two in serious condition and two in stable condition to the hospital.
“This is a tragic incident,” Const. Nicole Braithwaite with West Vancouver police said. “We are looking for any witnesses who may have information in regard to this incident to please contact police.”

Braithwaite said it is not known at this time where the motorhome entered the highway in order for it to be travelling the wrong way at the time of the collision.
“As you could believe, this was a very dynamic situation,” Braithwaite added. “We had four vehicles, we had multiple people inside of their vehicles, there was lots of fire trucks, ambulances, as well as police. We did have to block the highway and so there was about 300 cars that were parked on the highway and it took quite a while for us to turn those vehicles around and have them going westbound.”
