Video: Thick fog blankets Lower Mainland; more extensive fog expected through the weekend

A thick fog covered parts of Metro Vancouver out towards Abbotsford this morning.

The visibility is near zero in many regions of the Lower Mainland.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down and keep their eyes on the road.

Westjet, Air Canada and Harbour Air have posted alerts this morning, saying fog and reduced visibility may affect flights around the province today.

Passengers are asked to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Global BC weather anchor Kate Gajdosik says shorter days, longer nights, clear skies, and calm wind provide ideal conditions for the development of this type of fog, called radiation fog.

“This is exactly the weather pattern we currently find ourselves in across the South Coast with a strong ridge of high pressure situated just offshore and a layer of moisture trapped underneath,” says Gajdosik.

The fog is expected to start burning off late Friday morning through the early afternoon with another round of the low-lying cloud developing overnight into Saturday. This weather pattern will persist through the weekend and into next week.

Environment Canada said this afternoon that a ridge of high pressure is expected to persist into next week. Warmer air aloft is creating a strong inversion over the South Coast. As a result, extensive fog and low cloud is expected through the weekend for regions of the inner South Coast. The weak October sun may burn through some of the fog and cloud allowing for some brief sunny breaks in the afternoons.
