Winnipeg police identify two suspects related to Monday Point Douglas assaults

Winnipeg Police have identified two suspects related to the recent murder of Danielle Ballantyne along with two serious assaults in the 600 block of Main Street on Monday morning. Michelle Karlenzig reports. – Aug 25, 2022

Winnipeg Police have identified two suspects related to the recent murder of Danielle Ballantyne along with two serious assaults in the 600 block of Main Street on Monday morning.

The victim was found dead in an apartment in the 100 block of Jarvis Avenue at 7 a.m.

Additionally, police have released details about three serious assaults in the Point Douglas neighbourhood during the early hours of Monday.

The victims were all in their 50s and were taken to hospital where two remain in critical condition while the third man is in stable condition.

On Wednesday, members of the homicide unit arrested and charged a 15-year-old with second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Additionally, a Canada-wide arrest warrant for the same charges has been issued for another young man.

Sel Burrows, Point Douglas community activist says while he’s glad police made an arrest quickly another suspect is still out there and residents are concerned.

“They are very worried, very scared. We talk to people about being careful. We feel very safe in North Point Douglas most of the time but late late late at night or very early in the morning, we tell them to be extremely careful.”

Winnipeg Police Service has been collaborating with community organizations supporting families of MMIWG2S+ persons to provide a trauma-informed and culturally safe support network for Danielle’s family.

The homicide unit is continuing to investigate this homicide and the related aggravated assaults.
