SASKATOON – PotashCorp has committed $375,000 for the second year-in-a-row to support nutritious programs for Saskatoon students.

Wednesday’s contribution will be allocated between both school divisions.

Twenty public schools get $200,000 to go towards the ‘PotashCorp Food4Thought Nutrition Program’ which provides healthy meals for students.

“Our schools play a vital role in not only educating students, but also in ensuring that they are well-nourished and ready to learn,” said Ray Morrison, Saskatoon Public Schools Board chair.

$175,000 is going to catholic schools to support nutrition programs and community gardens at 16 schools.

“PotashCorp’s support of the nutrition programs in our schools has made a world of difference to our students,” said Diane Boyko, chair of the Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools board of education.

This funding announcement comes in celebration of World Food Day. This year’s global theme is nutrition and sustainable food systems for food security.

“As global populations keep growing and arable lands remain limited, PotashCorp will continue to provide the essential nutrients necessary for farmers to produce nutritious food,” said Bill Doyle, PotashCorp’s president and CEO.

Without fertilizer, it is estimated the world would need approximately 50 percent more farmland, according to PotashCorp.

The Saskatchewan-based fertilizer company is also a global leader in food security.

PotashCrop is committing up to $35 million over seven years to the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) to address increasing demand.

Also, PotashCorp announced a multi-year partnership last year with the ‘Free The Children’ charity. Since then, this partnership has thrived overseas and has brought We Day Saskatchewan to Saskatoon.

PotashCorp is the world’s largest fertilizer company by capacity, producing the three primary crop nutrients: potash, phosphate and nitrogen.
