Elderly pedestrian hit by truck on Portage Avenue

Witnesses say a man with a walker was crossing Portage Avenue with the light, but his progress was so slow the light changed while he was still on the street when it changed and he was hit. Blair Malazdrewich

WINNIPEG — An elderly man was hurt when he was hit by a large truck on Portage Avenue Wednesday.

It happened in an eastbound lane of Portage at Berry Street at about noon.

Witnesses said the man with a walker was crossing the street with the light, but his progress was so slow the light changed while he was still on the street and he was struck by the eastbound tractor-trailer.

Firefighters had to pull him from under the truck, but witnesses said he was conscious and talking.

Eastbound Portage Avenue at Cavell Drive was closed to traffic during the rescue.
