John Cantin has a wealth of experience when it comes to weather – he enjoyed 3 unique careers during his working years all linked to the weather in differing ways. The first career was as a senior parks foreman for the City of Edmonton. Weather was always a major influence, particularly for closing venues. Earlier than usual snow storms created some interesting problems which impacted the operation of Clarke Stadium. His 2nd career was directly involved in meteorology; upper air technician. High altitude instrumented balloons were launched twice a day to gather temperature, humidity, and wind data. His last career, from which he retired 6 years ago, was as an air traffic controller. Weather in the aviation industry can cause delays and cancellations. It creates increased stress for controllers as aircraft need to divert around bad weather. John has taken all levels of Photoshop at NAIT as well as culinary boot camp, baking by hand, and peninsular cooking. The remainder of his free time is spent in volunteer work at the MS Society, teaching computer skills to seniors at Meadowcroft Seniors Residence, and the Edmonton Blues Festival. “I applied for the Ground Force as I feel my background and experience will help me to share Alberta weather with others.”
