Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alex Edler has been suspended for three games without pay for an illegal check during Thursday’s game against the San Jose Sharks.
The National Hockey League said in a statement Friday that Edler’s check to the head against Sharks forward Tomas Hertl during the final minute of play in the second period was illegal.
Hertl lost his helmet when Edler collided with him. No penalty was called.
Edler is also considered a repeat offender, according to the NHL. He was suspended two games last season for charging Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith.

Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Edler will forfeit $182,926.83 of pay during the three-game suspension.
The money will be donated to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The Canucks fell 4-1 to the Sharks in the game at Rogers Arena.
