Cancer society in desperate need of volunteer drivers

CALGARY- A desperate call has been made by the Canadian Cancer Society, in hopes of attracting volunteers.

Demand is up for cancer patients needing rides to and from treatment, as many can’t drive themselves or can’t afford parking or cabs.

However, the cancer society’s volunteer driver program is short about 20 drivers, and can’t keep up with the demand.

“We’re putting the program in jeopardy for our clients,” explains program coordinator Annamae Giberson. “In order to meet the demand of our clients, we need those drivers.”

Those who use the service say that if it was cancelled, it could have dire consequences.

“Chances are I wouldn’t be going for treatment,” says cancer patient Lena Arcand. “Family members can’t take me, they can’t take time off work.”
