‘Annie was our only child’: Parents of hit-and-run victim plead for driver to come forward

“You are somebody’s father, son or husband; your loved ones would feel the same way as we do if someone they love was taken away from them,” begins the emotional plea to the driver of a vehicle that hit and killed 16-year-old Annie Leung.

Annie died on September 12 when she was hit in a crosswalk at the corner of Pitt River Road and Mary Hill Road in Port Coquitlam.

The driver that hit her and then took off has still not come forward, and today her parent’s issued a plea for that person to turn themselves in to police.

“I would say give him a fair judgement, because we are not a judge,” said Annie’s mother Maggie.

“We just want the story, we just want to hear from him.”

“And besides,” she added, “we are Christians, we would like in our hearts to forgive him.”

Annie was a student at Riverside Secondary School in Port Coquitlam and was an only child.

Her mother described her as a happy child who loved to draw.

“She is a really happy child, she is very cheerful character. She is always wearing a happy smile [with] a cheerful voice,” said Maggie.
“She has helped the school and promote the events with her drawing, and [writing] a lot of posters,” she added, saying Annie wanted to be an artist and a designer when she grew up.

Her parents wanted to thank her friends and classmates, and the young man who tried to save Annie’s life by holding on to her and calling 911 after she was hit by the truck.

Police say after the incident the driver stopped a short way down the road, got out of his truck, saw what happened, got back in and then drove away. Mounties say there is no way the driver did not know he had hit someone.

He was last seen heading southbound on Mary Hill Road.

Coquitlam RCMP have released surveillance footage from the scene, and while that has generated a lot of tips they have not found the person responsible. They do not have a person of interest in the case.

“Our family was deeply impacted when our daughter, Annie, was taken away from us in the accident,” Maggie and her husband Ricky said in a statement.

“We have suffered a tremendous sorrow for the sudden loss of our daughter, Annie. She was only 16 and should have had a beautiful life ahead of her. However, she died so suddenly in this hit and run accident and we didn’t even get a chance to say good-bye to her. Our family has been devastated ever since then.”
