16-year-old girl dies following apparent hit-and-run in Port Coquitlam

A 16-year-old girl who was rushed to hospital on Tuesday afternoon following what appears to be a hit and run in Port Coquitlam has died.

Mounties say it appears a black pick-up truck, possibly without a canopy, being driven by an older male with graying hair fled the scene after hitting the teenager.

The girl, who was crossing the road in the crosswalk with another girl, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The BC Coroners Service notified RCMP at 3:30 a.m. this morning that the victim had died.

She was a student at Riverside Secondary School in Port Coquitlam and has been identified as Annie Leung.

Police say after the incident the driver stopped a short way down the road, got out of his truck, saw what happened, got back in and then drove away. Mounties say there is no way the driver did not know he had hit someone.

The Coquitlam School District has issued the following statement:

“The loss of one of students is a devastating blow to our school community.
