Manitoba Public Insurance is scrambling to fix a computer problem that is creating a big backlog in auto insurance renewals and other business at Autopac agents throughout the province.

MPI says it began having a problem Wednesday with one of it’s data banks that’s knocked it’s computerized Autopac system off-line. The result is the province 306 Autopac agents must conduct business on paper, and enter the customer information into the on-line system once it’s back up and running. That has meant significant delays and some motorists unable to complete transactions.

In a statement today, a spokesman for MPI said customers will not be charged late fees or overdue interest, and no policies will be suspended or financing agreements cancelled as a result of these delays.

MPI says it hopes to have the problem resolved later today.
