A Winnipeg man is leading the fight to keep a piece of military history where it belongs.

David Jackson, a retired member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, is helping raise funds to buy a medal that was given to the family of a First World War hero from his regiment.

Sgt. Robert Spall was killed in action in France in 1918. Spall was awarded the Victoria Cross, the British Empire’s highest award for bravery, for his actions during the battle in which he lost his life. That medal is safely in the keeping of the PPCLI museum in Calgary.

But Spall’s family was also awarded the Memorial Cross, also known as the silver cross, given to mothers of fallen soldiers. That medal — inscribed with Spall’s name, service number and Victoria Cross award — is up for private auction by its current owner in Montreal.

Jackson and his army buddies are raising money to buy the Memorial Cross and put it with the rest of Spall’s decorations in the museum. The latest bid on eBay for the medal is more than $3,000, but Jackson believes it will sell for much more. So far his fundraising effort on the “go fund me” site has raised about $1800.
