CALGARY- When the June flood hit, many first responders rushed into the streets to help. Now, the Calgary Police Service is also being recognized for the great work it managed to do from behind a desk.
An international award was presented to the CPS last week at a social media conference called Connected Cops, for the service’s role using social media during the flood.
The Twitter account @CalgaryPolice constantly pumped out updates and vital information about things like evacuations, at one point pushing so much content out that it was temporarily put in ‘Twitter Jail’ for exceeding the daily number of tweets.
“Calgarians immediately rallied and lobbied Twitter to get our accounts back up and active,” said digital communication team Lead Sean Stephenson, in a statement. “They played a tremendous role in not only getting our account back up but also keeping the spirits of emergency responders high with their support, pictures, videos and incredible acts of kindness over Twitter and Facebook.”
Both the City of Calgary and CPS worked closely together during the event.
