TERRACE, B.C. – Two separate searches have been called off for three Terrace, B.C., men missing for more than a week in the northwest part of the province.
RCMP Const. Angela Rabut said 32-year-old Michael Sabo and 26-year-old Ike Murray went mushroom picking outside the northwestern B.C. city on Sept. 22 with Sabo’s brother when they disappeared.
She said Monday that all three men took a boat to pick mushrooms and that Sabo and Murray went off on their own after arranging to meet the third man back at the boat that afternoon.
The third man waited several hours for the men to return but they never showed up, Rabout said.
He eventually left and reported them missing when he got to town, and a search began early the next day, she said.
Volunteers and search and rescue team members have looked for the men in the area east of Terrace, between Lorne Creek and Fiddler Creek, where they were last spotted.
Spokesperson Dave Jephson believes the men are still in the area because they would be hemmed in by natural barriers such as a river and mountainside.
About 25 Canadian Rangers and a volunteer team from the Armed Forces, joined the search efforts over the weekend but found no trace of either man.

“The bush up in this country is extremely rugged,” Rabut said. “It’s some steep terrain, very dense thick bush. The scenarios of what could have happened to these men are numerous. There are a lot of things that can happen to people in the bush in this country.”
Many wild animals are roaming around in the area at this time of year, she said.
“There are people talking a lot about a bear in the area but there’s more than one bear seen in the area. The bears are travelling around a lot right now. There are cougars and there are moose. There are wolves up there too and even coyotes. If you get somebody who is injured or sick they can hurt somebody too.”
Both men are healthy, and Sabo is an avid outdoorsman, Rabut said.
In the unrelated case, a 50-year-old Terrace man hasn’t been seen since Sept. 20, when he walked out of his house wearing grey work pants and work boots, she said.
The search for Daniel Driediger has also been called off. (The Canadian Press, CFTK)
