HALIFAX – Crews are clearing the scene where a tractor trailer carrying hazardous goods flipped on a Dartmouth highway early Friday morning.

Const. Pierre Bourdages of the Halifax Regional Police said the rig overturned just after 4:30 a.m. while turning from Highway 118 onto Akerley Boulevard.

The driver of the truck wasn’t injured and walked away from the scene after being checked by paramedics.

The 18-wheeler truck was carrying hazardous goods to Canadian Tire, including thousands of kilograms of corrosive and flammable goods, including propane and paint thinners.

“It’s more explosive than we initially thought,” said Capt. John Wynn of Halifax Fire.

Corey Beals, division commander with Halifax Fire, said the situation is now stable and firefighters are leaving the scene.

Department of Environment officials also assessed the crash and found that although most of the truck’s chemical containers fell down the embankment, none spilled to cause any environmental risks.

Fire officials say they may be called back if police request help removing the materials or the truck.

Crews closed Akerley Boulevard from the Burnside Industrial Park to Highway 102. The scene has been turned over to Halifax Regional Police and RCMP officers.
