Saskatoon’s fall weather outlook above average

SASKATOON – The vibrant colours of fall are well and truly upon us but the cold and blustery conditions of the past couple of days aren’t a sign of what this season has in store.

A change in seasons is evident one week into fall and whether you love it or hate it, the cold and windy weather isn’t likely to hang around.

“The past few days we’ve had very rainy, cooler conditions but overall this September we’ve been above seasonal and actually the good news is we’re expecting that above seasonal trend to continue through the rest of fall,” said Global News Meteorologist Peter Quinlan.

On the dreary, wet and cold days its easy to forget the warmer conditions of a summer are not far behind us.

“Summer started off very wet and very cool, but we actually made up for it as we headed in towards August and through the month of August we were actually above season temperatures through that month so overall throughout the summer we were about 0.1 degrees warmer than normal,” said Quinlan.

But as the leaves change colour and fall, leaving the branches more and more bare, there’s one question on everyone’s mind.

When we asked people on the street the reaction was overwhelming, “How much snow are we going to have?”

And the verdict is positive.

“Normal snowfall here in Saskatoon is about 48.7 cm throughout the months of December, January and February and right now it’s looking like we will expect around normal snowfall amounts,” said Quinlan.

“It’s looking like the snow will be melting a little bit sooner than it did last year, the long range seasonal forecast is showing us an above seasonal spring at this point but a lot can change between now and then,” he added.
