EDMONTON- Over 800 people came together at Louise McKinney Park Sunday morning to promote heart health.
The annual Heartbeat Run promotes an active, healthy lifestyle while raising funds for the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
“It is the premier heart institute in western Canada and what’s really exciting is the international reputation that the Maz is building right here in Edmonton, for innovative research, for the techniques used for patient care and, of course, for surgical outcomes,” said Nicole Merrifield, a communications advisor with the University Hospital Foundation.
“The whole idea is to keep the Maz on the leading edge of cardiac care.”
This is the fifth year the run has been held in Edmonton. Participants had the option of running a one, five or 10 kilometre route. Even some former patients of the Mazankowski participated in the run.
“They’re doing the run as part of their own training and rehab,” Merrifield explained.
Before the run started Sunday, the event had already raised $25,000 for the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
