Langley RCMP say they issued 158 tickets for distracted driving in just four hours over the past two days.

Police across B.C. are pleading for drivers to put the phone down, as part of a campaign with ICBC.

In addition to the 158 violation tickets, police made arrests for drug possession, and prohibited driving. One vehicle was also impounded.

Police say they chose intersections in Langley that have seen major collisions for the blitz.

Drivers caught using a mobile device while behind the wheel can be ticketed $167.00.

ICBC and police offer the following tips for drivers:

  • Let your phone pick up your calls and text messages. It’s easier and much safer to retrieve your messages when you’re not behind the wheel.
  • Download ICBC’s free ringtones at icbc.com/drivesmart to remind yourself to leave the phone alone when you’re driving.
  • Ask your passengers to make or receive calls and texts for you.
  • If you find it challenging to ignore your phone while behind the wheel, have a plan to avoid the temptation – turn it off or place it in the trunk of your car.
  • Hands-free means a Bluetooth, wired headset or even a speaker phone but the device must be securely attached to the car – you can’t have it in your lap or loose on the seat beside you.
  • It’s not ok to use send, check or read texts, emails or even dial your phone while stopped at a traffic light. Hands free means hands free
