Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place following a robbery in Markham Wednesday afternoon.
York Regional Police said officers were called to a bank located at 2900 Steeles Ave East for reports of a robbery just before 2 p.m.
Police said a caller reported that a suspect entered the bank, threatened to shoot an employee and demanded cash. Once the suspect got the cash, they fled the scene on foot.
Police said when officers found the suspect, they engaged in a foot pursuit.
An interaction ensued and the suspect was shot. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the suspect who was shot was a 25-year-old man.
In an update Thursday, police said Tristan Clarke was charged with robbery with a firearm and five counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order.
The suspect has been released from hospital and has been charged in connection with the robbery. CHARGED: Tristan CLARKE, 25, of no fixed address CHARGES:

The Special Investigations Unit is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury, alleged sexual assault, or firearm discharge at a person.
