WATCH: The NRDC’s video “Robert Redford: Tar Sands Oil Is Killing Our Planet“
CALGARY – Alberta’s oilsands are taking heat once again, this time from Hollywood icon Robert Redford.
The 77-year-old actor stars in a new video from an American environmental group which calls Alberta’s oil the dirtiest on the planet.
The minute-long video was released by the National Resources Defense Council on Monday.
In it, Redford also says the oilsands are “destroying our great northern forests at a terrifying rate” and “killing our planet.”

He asks viewers to join him in telling U.S. President Barack Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline project and instead support clean energy.
The actor serves as a treasurer for the New York City-based non-profit group.
Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Alison Redford isn’t rattled by the comments.
“I’ve really got to question how people who are using energy flying on planes can make these sorts of comments and assume they’re going to have any credibility,” says Alison Redford. “We have to start having a discussion based on the facts. That’s not what we’re seeing here.”
“When we talk about oilsands development, we are seeing companies make tremendous progress with respect to environmental sustainability,” adds Alison Redford.
Last week, Canadian rock star Neil Young blasted the oilsands, saying Fort McMurray looks like Hiroshima.
The comments prompted a Fort McMurray radio station to ban Neil Young’s music for a day.
