Pair of Huskies start the season in style

SASKATOON – When the season began, most of the attention that went towards the Huskies running back position was directed at the returning Dexter Janke.

Perhaps overlooked by some was second year back Shane Buchanan. But after two straight 100 yard games, Buchanan isn’t being overlooked any more.

“It’s nice to have both him and Dex,” said Huskies head coach Brain Towriss.

“They are both playing pretty well for us. Shane’s come through a little bit more on protection and those kind of things because he did play last year.”

Buchanan played just three games in 2012 because of a hamstring injury.

He attributes his hot start to the work he put in this off-season with Huskies head physical therapist Rhonda Shishkin.

“Just stuck to the program that we have and our physical therapist Rhonda went above and beyond to help me recover from an injury I had last season,” Buchanan said before practice this week.

“I really owe it all to her and all the help she put in for me.”

Another Huskie who credits a fast start to a clean bill of health is Mitch Stevens who already has 220 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

“I think just being healthy in the off-season was big for me. Being able to do the winter workouts and just having the confidence when I got on the field during camp that was healthy.”

Stevens and Buchanan will look to keep their impressive starts going in a battle of the un-defeated on Saturday, when the Huskies travel to McMahon Stadium to face the Calgary Dinos.
