Calgary election 2021: Who won in Ward 7?

Terry Wong is projected to become the new councillor for Ward 7.

Wong replaces Duh Farrell, who stepped down from the central Calgary seat after serving 20 years on city council.

For the 2021 election, the western half of downtown north of the CP Rail tracks to 14 Street will join the ward.

Here’s a quick look at the nine candidates running for council in Ward 7, in alphabetical order.

Greg Amoruso

A resident of the ward for nearly 50 years, Amoruso has a lengthy career in business.

Amoruso pledges to freeze council salaries, stop rezoning land, privatize city services, lower small business taxes, improve transit and stop spending on revitalization.

Daria Bogdanov

A Russian immigrant and public relations professional by trade, Bogdanov has experience with medical, electronics and consulting sectors.

Bogdanov is also a member of Craig Chandler’s Take Back City Hall slate of candidates, and pledges to “get this city back on track.”

Matt Lalonde

With training in city planning and urban studies, Lalonde lists being a print production specialist as job experience in his LinkedIn profile.

Lalonde hopes to improve the operating environments for small business, reduce city spending, provide incentives for downtown recovery and improve mobility within the ward.

Heather McRae

McRae has a variety of professional experience including communications and marketing in the private and non-profit sectors.

Her priorities, if elected, including climate-friendly solutions like transit, biodiversity and charging stations for EVs, balanced community growth, improving infrastructure and support for small business.

Marilyn North Peigan

A former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, North Peigan, a resolution health support worker, was a member of the advisory council that produced the White Goose Flying Report — a report that highlighted the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the City of Calgary could enact.

North Peigan’s platform includes economic recovery through main streets, downtown revitalization and the Green Line, revising the city tax model, improving climate resiliency and reconciliation.

Benjamin Shepherd

Shepherd has shared little about his professional, educational or volunteer background. Social media posts seem to indicate Shepherd’s opposition to COVID-19 public health measures like restricting access to non-essential businesses with vaccine passports or vaccine mandates.

Shepherd hopes to reduce taxes, cut city council remuneration and “reopen” businesses.

Erin Waite

With experience in corporate communications and investor relations, Waite’s most recent leadership role was with Connections Counselling.

Waite’s commitments, if elected as councillor, include downtown revitalization, inner-city neighborhood reinvestment, community consultation overhaul and building out the Green Line.

Derek Williams

A Mount Royal University psychology grad, Williams has a variety of professional experience including managerial positions in sales, marketing and hospitality, and as a business owner of a scrubs retailer. He is also a volunteer coordinator with a local parent council.

Williams aims to improve citizens’ value for tax dollars, increase affordable and accessible housing, revitalize the downtown, support small business and build community.

Terry Wong

With previous professional experience in hospital management systems and as part of management with the City of Calgary’s property assessment department and other projects, Wong’s most recent role has been with the Chinatown BIA.

Wong previously ran to be Ward 2’s councillor, coming in fourth with 18 per cent of the vote.

Wong aims to create clean and safe communities, increase affordability and vibrancy if elected to office.

In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.

Election day is Monday, Oct. 18.
