MONTREAL – Transport Quebec is delaying the closure of a busy Notre-Dame-de-Grâce route to downtown until December.
The Saint Jacques Street bridge had to be rebuilt to align with the configuration of the new Turcot Interchange.
Originally expected to begin this month, the St-Jacques work requires the complete closure of the street between Girouard and Prud’Homme for 18 months.
With the current closure of the Turcot Interchange and construction of the McGill University Health Centre Super-hospital, travelers were already being hampered on their way to work.
Add in the closing of the bridge, which will deprive N.D.G. drivers and bus users of a key route to and from downtown via the Ville Marie Expressway, a lot of travelers say getting to work on time will soon become nearly impossible.
Transport Quebec is also considering opening some highway access in the area.
“We want to alleviate traffic at intersections that will be affected by the closure of St-Jacques, such as Côte-St-Luc Rd. and Décarie Blvd, and Sherbrooke and Décarie Blvd.” said a spokesperson for Transport Quebec.
Transport Quebec say they are also looking to add a reserved bus lane on Sherbrooke St this November in an attempt to ease congestion and lure people into using public transit.
