CORNWALL, Ont. – Emergency workers say the situation is under control at a BASF chemical plant in Cornwall, Ont., after an explosion Tuesday morning.
Police and firefighters responded to the site of the plant (on Wallrich Avenue) just after 6 a.m. and police have confirmed there were no immediate injuries.
Cornwall police Const. Dan Cloutier says the scale of the explosion was “relatively small” and there was no fire.
He says one worker who was in the plant at the time of the explosion was reported to have escaped the building unharmed.
Neighbours say the explosion was powerful enough to shake the windows in their homes. Roads in the area had been blocked off by police but have since reopened.
BASF, a global chemical corporation, has roughly 30 employees at its Cornwall plant, which manufactures monomeric and polymeric plasticizers.
