Residents rescued from Brokenhead blaze

WINNIPEG – A blaze on the Brokenhead First Nation has completely destroyed a building with several family units inside.

The fire broke out around 7 p.m. Friday evening.

RCMP say a few officers spotted smoke and quickly started rescuing people.

Fire officials on scene tell Global News at this point they believe no one was seriously hurt in the blaze.

RCMP say a 5-year-old child was rescued and all 28 known residents have been accounted for.

Several people were treated for smoke inhalation.

At least three fire departments helped battle the fast moving flames that took hours to control.

The building is described as a townhouse complex with eight units.

In a news release, RCMP say the town house complex is considered a total loss.

Brokenhead is about 70 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg, just off Highway 59.

The fire commissioner is investigating what sparked the blaze.
