Boy, 10, dies after being pulled from lake in Quebec City

A boy was rushed to hospital after he was pulled from a lake at the Base Plein Air Ste-Foy. Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Quebec City police have confirmed that a 10-year-old boy has died in hospital after he was pulled from a lake at the Base Plein Air Sainte-Foy, a recreation area in the region.

Officers were called to the scene at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday to lend assistance after the boy was seen to be having difficulty in the water.

Quebec City police spokesperson David Poitras said that lifeguards spotted the boy and immediately attempted a rescue but lost sight of him after he went below the surface.

People at the lake, some in boats, joined in the search. Poitras said it was a citizen who ultimately found the boy.

Lifeguards quickly started performing CPR but the child was unconscious when taken to hospital.

Police escorted the ambulance, blocking several intersections to traffic, to ensure quick transport.

The boy later died in hospital.

It is unclear how long the child was in the water, but an investigation is underway.

The incident happened during a school outing.
