Deputy Chief Jack Blair says such fires take a long time to extinguish because of the material that’s burning,

He also says people will be able to see smoke rising from the landfill for several days due to underground fires.

Blair says the regional district has secured a contractor who will continue to soak down the landfill and perform fire-watch duties.

A recycling facility at the landfill suffered about $1 million in damages during a fire in March. (CKIZ)
