Dance teacher trying to maintain Indian culture through dance

TORONTO- Puja Amin has been studying dance since she was a child.  After immigrating to Canada, she established a dance studio called, Sanskriti Arts Dance Centre, and pursue her passion for teaching the art form while maintaining her traditional Indian culture.

“Sanskriti means culture and our main purpose is to spread Indian arts and culture all through the city of Toronto and North America.  We also want to enhance health and wellness through performing arts as well have a feeling for cultural inclusion for everybody that is here,'” she said.

Her studio’s Bollywood dance program, which runs year round, introduces students of all ages to various influences on Bollywood music in a variety of styles.  The dancers also learn basic foot work, hand gestures, and facial expressions. Students who participate in the program improve physical strength and balance, posture and poise, as well as build confidence.

“I’ve been bringing my son and daughter to Sanskriti for four years now. To see them at a such a young age on stage at a recital in front of 200 people and to have no fear, it’s just amazing to see that confidence,” Sapna Mehta, a parent of one of Amin’s students  said

“I’ve learned various styles of Indian dance and I’ve made some new friends that have the same culture as me,`Anjali Chande, a dance student, said.
