UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on alleged chemical weapons use in Syria

Watch: Statement from UN Secretary General who is shocked by alleged toxic gas attack in Syria

The U.N. Security Council has scheduled emergency consultations on the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the council will meet at 3 p.m. EDT Wednesday.

He said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is “shocked” at the reported use of chemical weapons earlier Wednesday.

A team of U.N. chemical weapons experts is currently in Syria to investigate previous allegations of chemical weapons use.

Del Buey said the U.N. team’s leader, Ake Sellstrom, is in discussions with the Syrian government on all issues related to alleged chemical weapons use, including Wednesday’s incident.
