Waterton campground partially closed due to bear threat

CALGARY- A popular campground in Waterton Lakes National Park has been closed to some campers, due to the number of bears in the area.

The warning affects the Crandell Mountain campground, which is located in the scenic Blakiston Valley. There are also tipi camping sites.

Parks Canada is closing the area to those sleeping in tents as a safety precaution. However, people with hard-sided campers and trailers are still allowed.

There has been high bear activity in the campground recently, including incidents of bears looking into tents for food. The animals have not left, despite repeated hazing efforts by parks staff.

Tenters with reservations will be moved to the nearby Townsite campground.
