U of S reminds students to walk in pairs

SASKATOON – With a new university school year just around the corner, many students will be walking to classes.

The University of Saskatchewan is reminding them to try and avoid walking alone.

According to the the university’s protective services, they receive an average of 12,000 calls for service a year. The majority of those are theft, vehicle break-ins, mischief and impaired driving.

The number of attacks is low and overall campus is safe.

“Students shouldn’t be concerned, but aware,” said Staff Sgt. Dave Prout.

Protective services say you can try to avoid becoming a victim by walking in pairs and in well populated areas, or using campus services like safe walk and their rape aggression defence training classes.

“If you are in trouble yell something that will get attention like ‘fire’, yelling ‘help’ doesn’t always work,” said Kris Kembel, lead instructor at Momentum Martial Arts.

Kembel said don’t punch or kick to get out of the grip of an attacker, instead “use the strongest parts of your body like your elbow and knee and hit repeatedly until they’re down.”
